Johan joined Terebinth as Senior Portfolio Manager in 2019 from Sanlam Investment Management, where he managed the Sanlam Alternative Rho Retail Hedge Fund between 2007 and 2018. He also established and managed Sanlam’s High Yield Fund and co-managed the Enhanced Cash Fund. Johan headed Sanlam’s Hedge Fund unit between 2008 and 2013, overseeing various funds including Equity Long/Short, Equity Market Neutral, Equity Statistical Arbitrage, High Yield, Enhanced Cash, Fixed-Interest as well as All-Bond and Inflation-Linked portable alpha funds. In 2014, Johan shifted his focus back to fund management.
He holds a BCom Honours degree in Investment Management as well as a BCom degree in Economics.
Johan started his career at Merrill Lynch in 1994 in Fixed Income Sales, joining ABN Amro in 1997 as part of the team that created the bank’s South African primary dealership. Johan’s main responsibility was to build the client franchise.
He subsequently joined JPMorgan in 2000 where he spent 7 years representing the UK branch’s Emerging Market team in South Africa with a focus on bond, derivative, FX sales as well as structured solutions for institutional and sovereign clients. Johan joined Sanlam to pursue his career objective of becoming a hedge fund manager, converting a small proprietary trading portfolio into a fully-fletched hedge fund unit running third party capital.
Johan brings more than two decades of wide-ranging financial market experience, with the last decade focused on actively managed absolute return and hedge fund strategies that delivered a solid track record through various business cycles.
