Nomathibana Matshoba, CFA, MPhil, BSc (Actuarial Science)

MD, Portfolio Manager, Authorised Representative, Head of Credit Committee, Risk and Compliance Committee Member

Nomathibana joined Terebinth as Portfolio Manager in 2017 from Catalyst Fund Managers, where she was an Investment Analyst specialising in listed property analysis. She is the lead Portfolio Manager on the Terebinth Enhanced Income Fund, Terebinth SCI Active Bond Fund, the SNN Money Market Fund and all related segregated mandates. Nomathibana shares management responsibilities on the Strategic Income Fund with Erik and Johan and is co-manager on the Hedge Fund products.

In 2010, Nomathibana was awarded her Master of Philosophy degree, with a major in Mathematics of Finance from the University of Cape Town. This follows the completion of a Bachelor of Business Science, with a major in Actuarial Science. She is a also a CFA charterholder.

Nomathibana brings wide-ranging experience in the financial services industry. Prior to her employment at Catalyst, she co-managed the strategic cash (including the Jibar Plus fund) and money market funds at Coronation Fund Managers, where she also had responsibilities in credit and general fixed income research. She has also worked within various divisions in the Old Mutual Group, the last position being as a Senior Strategy Analyst in the Old Mutual Emerging Markets team.

Erik Nel, Member of The Institute of Financial Markets (ICMQ)

CIO, Director, Authorised Representative, Key Individual, Risk and Compliance Committee Member

Erik Nel established Terebinth Capital in April 2013, after launching the absolute suite of products at Atlantic Asset Management in January 2009, that included establishing the award-winning Atlantic Point FI Macro Hedge Fund.

Prior to pursuing his career objective of becoming a macro fund manager, Erik was instrumental in assisting with the launch of RMB’s Fixed Income research platform (which included the highly successful South African Fixed Income Daily, authored by Erik) as well as building an international Fixed Income Sales business for Rand Merchant Bank.

Erik previously held positions at LASMO PLC in the UK in an accounting capacity and at Coronation Capital as a Fixed Income dealer (where he was selected to participate in the prestigious Limuvune Project – a joint venture between Deutsche Bank and African Harvest for young banking professionals – during which time he received numerous market-related qualifications, including successfully completing CFA level 1). Prior to joining RMB, Erik headed up Institutional Fixed Income Sales at Nedbank Capital.

The many achievements in Erik’s career include Spires Award victories in various Fixed Income categories during his RMB employment and the distinction of being named Fixed Income Hedge Fund Manager of the Year in 2011 at the HedgeNews Africa Awards, for the management of the Atlantic Point Hedge Fund.

Mandy Pick, BCom (Financial Accounting)

Head of Operations, Authorised Representative under Supervision

Mandy joined Terebinth as Research Analyst in 2019 from State Street Southern Africa, where she was a Senior Fund Accountant in the NAV production team, focusing on client services and operations. She led two NAV production teams and mentored three staff members on the mentorship program.

She has been appointed as Head of Operations in 2020.

Mandy holds a BCom degree with specialisation in Financial Accounting from the University of Stellenbosch and completed the CFA Investment Foundations Program with the CFA Institute in September 2017.

Johan Kurtz, BCom (Economics), Hons (Investment Management)

Senior Portfolio Manager, Authorised Representative

Johan joined Terebinth as a Senior Portfolio Manager in 2019 from Sanlam Investment Management, where he managed the Sanlam Alternative Rho Retail Hedge Fund since 2007. He also established and managed Sanlam’s High Yield Fund and co-managed the Enhanced Cash Fund. Johan headed Sanlam’s Hedge Fund unit from 2008 till 2013, overseeing various funds including Equity Long/Short, Equity Market Neutral, Equity Statistical Arbitrage, High Yield, Enhanced Cash, Fixed-Interest as well as All-Bond and Inflation-Linked portable alpha funds. In 2014, Johan shifted his focus back to fund management. Johan was one of Sanlam’s Key Individuals since the introduction of the FAIS requirements.

He holds a BCom Honours degree in Investment Management as well as a BCom degree in Economics.

Johan started his career at Merrill Lynch in 1994 in Fixed Income Sales, joining ABN Amro in 1997 as part of the team that created the bank’s South African primary dealership. Johan’s main responsibility was to build the client franchise.

He subsequently joined JPMorgan in 2000 where he spent 7 years representing the UK branch’s Emerging Market team in South Africa with a focus on bond, derivative, FX sales as well as structured solutions for institutional and sovereign clients. Johan joined Sanlam to pursue his career objective of becoming a hedge fund manager, converting a small proprietary trading portfolio into a fully-fletched hedge fund unit running third party capital.

Johan brings more than two decades of wide-ranging financial market experience, with the last decade focused on actively managed absolute return and hedge fund strategies that delivered a solid track record through various business cycles.

Paballo Nhambiri, BSc, Hons and MSc (Quantitative Risk Management)

Quantitative Analyst, Authorised Representative under Supervision

Paballo joined Terebinth as Quantitative Analyst in 2019 from Rand Merchant Bank, where he was a Quantitative Analyst and Risk Manager in the RMB Prime Services division. Prior to joining RMB in September 2017, Paballo was a junior consultant at FIS Global (formerly SunGard), where he worked on various projects in the Capital Markets division.

In 2016, Paballo was awarded his Masters (MSc) in Quantitative Risk Management from the North West University, after completing Honours in Business Science with specialisation in Quantitative Risk Management in 2015 and a Bachelor of Business Science, with a major in Financial Mathematics in 2014.

Paballo brings valuable programming skills to the team as well as experience in Quantitative Risk Management, Derivative pricing and Portfolio optimization.

Dumisani Ngwenza, MPhil, BSc (Actuarial Science)

Quantitative Analyst, Authorised Representative under Supervision

Dumisani Ngwenza joined Terebinth in 2020 as Quantitative Analyst from Old Mutual Specialised Finance, where he was a Junior Quantitative Analyst. He monitored and managed interest rate management strategies and the investment guaranteed returns book.

In 2019, Dumisani was awarded his Master of Philosophy degree, with a major in Mathematical Finance from the University of Cape Town. This follows the completion of a Bachelor of Business Sciences degree, with a major in Actuarial Sciences.

Oyena Mtuzula, BCom (Management Studies)

Credit Analyst, Authorised Representative under Supervision

Oyena Mtuzula joined Terebinth as a Credit Analyst in 2020 from Kagiso Asset Management, where she was an Associate Analyst. Her main responsibility was to research and make sound investment decisions

She holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree with a major in Management studies from the University of Cape Town.

Oyena brings a wealth of bottom-up analysis skills to the team, given her experience in equity analysis.

Johanna van der Bergh

Office Manager

Johanna joined Terebinth Capital as office manager in 2018. With material industry experience Johanna assists the team with a variety of office tasks. Colleagues appreciate her motherly approach, attention to detail and high work ethic. It is because of these reasons that a decision was made in 2020 to assist Johanna in buying a house in a neighborhood of her choice.

Bonolo Zwane, BSc (Actuarial Science)

Independent Non-Executive Director & Chairwoman

Bonolo joined the Terebinth Capital Board as an Independent Non-Executive Director in 2018. She is responsible for Corporate Governance within the organisation and provides strategic guidance to the Board. Bonolo brings with her a wealth of knowledge within the Investment Management industry, previously holding the position of Managing Director at Blue Ink Investments as well as various positions at Stanlib, including portfolio management of assets and business strategy development for Sub-Saharan Africa

Bonolo holds a Bachelor of Science degree with specialisation in Actuarial Science and completed a Diploma in Technical Actuarial Techniques at the Faculty of Actuaries.
